Reformer Pilates: Frequently asked questions
Reformer Pilates is gaining popularity, and with that comes numerous questions from newcomers and seasoned practitioners alike.
At Strong + Bendy, we're all about making fitness accessible, fun, and informative. So, let's dive into the most frequently asked questions about Reformer Pilates and give you the lowdown.
1. What is Reformer Pilates?
Reformer Pilates is a dynamic form of Pilates that utilises a specialised machine called the "Reformer" bed. This apparatus consists of a sliding carriage, springs, ropes with handles, and a footbar, providing adjustable resistance to enhance strength, flexibility, and posture. The Reformer allows for a broader range of exercises compared to mat Pilates, offering both support and challenge in your workout.
2. How does Reformer Pilates differ from mat-based Pilates?
While both forms share the foundational principles of Pilates, the key difference lies in the equipment:
Mat Pilates: Performed on a mat using body weight and occasionally small props for resistance.
Reformer Pilates: Utilises the Reformer bed, which provides adjustable resistance through springs, allowing for a wider variety of exercises and the ability to target specific muscle groups differently than mat Pilates.
Our expert instructors will ensure a safe and effective workout tailored to your needs.
4. What should I wear to a Reformer Pilates class?
Opt for comfortable, breathable clothing that allows for a full range of motion.
Grippy socks are mandatory to provide stability to the machine during your workout.
5. How often should I do Reformer Pilates to see results?
Consistency is more key than the number of times per week. You can attend as many classes as you like, one to four times a month as it suits you, we recommend doing what feels right to your body and the goals that you want to use Reformer Pilates’ benefits for. Regular practice can lead to improved strength, flexibility, posture, and overall well-being.
6. Can I do Reformer Pilates if I'm pregnant?
Yes, in the first trimester of your pregnancy it is safe to continue with your reformer pilates sessions, although it isn’t advisable to start new types of exercise - so it’s really only appropriate if it was a regular practise for you before you were pregnant.
In T2 and T3 you are no longer able to lie down on your back or front and therefore it does make partaking in reformer classes not appropriate - unless the class specifically states that it is pre-natal friendly and doesn’t not include these moves.
If you have any further questions about pregnancy reach out to our Studio Owner Rhian at rhian@strongandbendy.co.uk.
7. Can I do Reformer Pilates if I have an injury?
Reformer Pilates is often used as a rehabilitation tool due to its low-impact nature and adjustable resistance. It can aid in injury prevention and recovery when combined with other fitness routines. However, it's crucial to inform your instructor about any injuries so they can provide appropriate modifications and ensure exercises are performed safely. Always consult with your healthcare provider or physical therapist before beginning or resuming Pilates after an injury.
8. Do I need any special equipment for Reformer Pilates?
The primary equipment needed is the Reformer bed itself. We provide these at Strong + Bendy during our Reformer classes at Prince Edward Rd. The only thing we recommend bringing other than what you normally bring for a workout (like your water bottle and sweat towel) is wearing grippy socks which can enhance stability during exercises.
9. What is Reformer Pilates best for?
Reformer Pilates primarily focuses on building strength, flexibility, and improving posture: the workout engages multiple muscle groups, increases muscle tone, and can boost your metabolism.
